Ethnic Rhinoplasty: An Overview

At Banobagi, one of the surgeries we excel in is rhinoplasty. We believe that there are certain elements that contribute to a more beautiful nose. The height, shape of the bridge, the thickness of the skin, the size of the nostrils are all factors that need to be considered to create a more harmonious nose. Likewise, we also take into account the function of the nose. In addition to the previous, a surgeon should embrace the specific needs of the patient. Consequently, we don’t do cookie-cutter noses but we customize the nose that is right for the patient. This is especially important with ethnic rhinoplasty. Ethnic rhinoplasty is nose surgery that considers the ethnicity of the patient. This means that the surgeon will perform nose surgery to either augment the appearance of the nose and/or to improve the function of the nose without altering the patient’s ethnicity.

If you are a candidate for ethnic rhinoplasty, here are some of the important facts to know.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty: The Different Types

The ultimate goal is an aesthetically pleasing nose that is in harmony with the rest of the face. At Banobagi, we consider ethnic rhinoplasty as Caucasian rhinoplasty, African American Rhinoplasty, Latin American Rhinoplasty, and Middle Eastern Rhinoplasty. Each ethnic rhinoplasty differs from the other.

Caucasian Rhinoplasty:

Common features of a Caucasian nose:

  • Hooked nose
  • Slender tip
  • Thin skin

Many Caucasians who want to get rhinoplasty are interested in correcting their nasal hump, drooping tip and/or their misshaped nostrils.  Although this type of nose is extremely different from the Asian nose, we are very experienced in correcting Caucasian noses. We will employ a combination (if needed) of techniques to correct the typical issues occurring with Caucasian Noses.  For example, they are:

  • Nasal Hump Reduction
  • Augmentation of nose via autologous material
  • Reducing or reshaping the alars (nostrils)
  • Correct the droopy nose tip
  • Improving breathing function that may have been caused by birth or injury

African American Rhinoplasty

Common features of an African American Nose

  • Wide nostrils
  • Bulbous nose
  • Wide nasal tip
  • Thick Skin
  • Flat bridge

Many African Americans who want to get rhinoplasty are interested in correcting their wide alars, poorly projected tip, and their bulbous nose. Similarly, the Asian nose and African American noses share commonalities The patient below, came to us wanting to correct her bulbous nose and tip. She had previously gotten nose fillers. Dr. Lee, our head rhinoplasty surgeon, performed the following procedures:

  • Removed previous nose filler
  • Rhinoplasty with osteotomy using ear cartilage
  • Silicone implant on her bridge
  • Septal cartilage
  • Nose rim extension
  • Alar (nostril) reduction

As you see, we were able to address her concerns. We were able to preserve her ethnicity, soften her features but most importantly still make her look like herself.

Latin American Rhinoplasty

Latin American Rhinoplasty is rhinoplasty for people who are from Latin America, Spain, Mexico etc.  Mestizo is a term that refers to patients from the above region. Although the Hispanic race can be diverse, there are similarities:

Common features of a Hispanic nose:

  • Thick and oily nasal skin
  • Weak cartilage in the tip
  • Prominent dorsal hump
  • Bulbous nose
  • Wide Nostrils

The challenge of a Latin American Rhinoplasty is to create a more refined nose without it looking bigger. Our doctors use sutures and autologous tissue to achieve this goal.

Middle Eastern Rhinoplasty

Common features of a Middle Eastern nose:

  • Large nasal humps on the bridge
  • Drooping tip
  • Long Nose
  • Weak tip

People from Iran, Turkey, Saudia Arabia, and UAE have a middle eastern nose. These patients typically want a smaller nose with a more defined and higher tip. In order to achieve success with this type of ethnic rhinoplasty, surgeons will usually reduce cartilage and bone.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty: The Right Surgeon

In conclusion, the best type of doctor for an ethnic rhinoplasty is one who has had a lot of experience with different nose types. In addition, a doctor who understands the particular traits of an ethnic nose and who works to preserve the racial identity of the patient is key. Even though most of the traits above can be characteristic of the specific ethnicity, each person is different. At Banobagi, we make sure that the patient’s nose is harmonious and symmetrical with their face.
